Just 3 years ago I had a marketing business that I started for one main reason, which just might sound familiar to you…

I wanted to be my own boss, have the option to make as much money as I wanted, and have control over my life. I’d had countless jobs, all of which I was very good and very successful at, but I really struggled with working for someone else. I hated having to ask permission to take time off, and inwardly I constantly battled with the prevailing mindset that the job was more important than anything else. But I figured I just had to earn my wings, and once I did that, I’d be a lot happier working for myself.

Well, at the age of 29, I was working as a senior consultant for a software company. I was one of only a handful of senior staff members who had decision-making powers and who counselled the President. It was a heady position for someone so young.

I held that position for over two years, and I was as happy as I could have been in it. I very much enjoyed the collegiate environment, my boss was the best one I’d ever had, my salary was double my age which was a big marker of success at the time, I could work from home when I wanted, I had wonderful assistants, and I could take time off without too much hassle.

And still, I was miserable.

So, on January 2nd, 2004, I worked out a deal and started working part. It was the best decision I’ve ever made and I’ve never looked back.

I launched my marketing consulting business. After learning absolutely everything that had to do with growing a business. I read every book on marketing and networking I could get my hands on. I took every course that was available. I even become a mini-expert on how to grow a business under budget because other business wanted to know what have done to grow my business.

Well, starting the business wasn’t easy. I did all the traditional things that everyone tells you to do – I joined the local chamber of commerce and went to countless networking breakfasts. I sent direct mail, trying to drum up business. I even cold called for a few months just to secure a contract (ugh!).

And what happened? I struggled and struggled to get clients! I was trading my time for money and I was getting nowhere fast. At the time, I just rented an apartment, and I was constantly worrying about paying the rent. There came a time when I thought I was going to have to close the business and give up hope of having the life of my dream.

But I was determined NOT to let that happen – ever.

So I hired a coach, a very, very, successful business coach to be exact. And no, I couldn’t afford her, but I also couldn’t afford NOT to hire her.

And I immersed myself in learning from her and the other successful coaches she introduced me to. I kept learning more about marketing while putting aside the old rules of marketing a small business. Not that they don’t work – but they were too hard for me to follow because I didn’t have the luxury of time or patience to do so – my creditors were starting to call.

And you know what? Today, I no longer struggle – to get clients, to make money, or to enjoy my life. I have loads of people in my community and on my email lists, I work with just a few fabulous clients, and I even have a waiting list of people who want to join my private mentor program!

I don’t worry about paying my rent, which is now a mortgage on my beautiful home. I don’t worry about whether I can wait another week to buy groceries. My business now brings me more money than I ever made working for someone else – and there’s nothing sweeter than that!

It’s truly an incredible feeling, to know you’re doing what you love to do, with the people you love to do it with, making the kind of income you love to make – and still have time to really enjoy your life!
